Syracuse University is situated on 200 acres on a hilltop overlooking downtown Syracuse; the main campus has 170 buildings. The campus is centered around a main quadrangle, often referred to as "the Quad." The 20 residence halls form the outer rim of campus. Students easily walk to class; an average trip takes about five minutes. SU students come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. About 42 percent are from New York State. Nearly 54 percent come to Syracuse from the other 49 states. Approximately 4.5 percent of our students come from other countries.
Independent Study Degree Programs (ISDP) are short residency
options designed for mature students who wish to pursue graduate degree
work through Syracuse University but who cannot take courses in the
traditional classroom format. Eight master’s programs are offered: the
master of business administration, the master of arts in advertising
design or illustration, the master of social science, the master of
library and information science, the master of science in
communications management, the master of science in information
management, and the master of science in telecommunications and network
management.
Residency requirements vary, but typically involve two to four
weeks each year. The remainder of each semester is devoted to
independent student work, completing assigned readings and projects and
performing research. Instruction is conducted by senior Syracuse
University faculty members. Students often confer with faculty by mail,
fax, telephone, or e-mail.ISDP students are, for the most part, midcareer adults who come
from all over the United States and several foreign countries.
