Student Profile: Frances Perez - Fashion Marketing

What did you do before coming to Parsons?

I was an English major at the University of Puerto Rico and had a small business making and selling my own jewelry. I’ve always been fascinated by the fashion industry from the marketing side. When I was little, my grandfather owned a jewelry store. I loved visiting him at work and helping out with the customers. I guess you could say it runs in the family.

What is your current obsession?

I’m obsessed with wedding gowns at the moment. Now that I have experience in the design process and with textiles, I understand how complicated they are to make. I love looking at them and absorbing all the tiny details that go into creating a beautiful design. This is a field I’m definitely interested in exploring more.

What is your best Parsons memory?

Not sleeping for three days straight during my first semester! I was working on a final for Fashion Industry Design and had to create a garment inspired by something else. I chose Jackie O’s iconic bows and designed a fifties style dress around that element. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and kept working until I was satisfied. I know it doesn’t sound like fun, but it made me appreciate my stamina and creativity under pressure.

If you could take any designer in history out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would, without a doubt, take Carolina Herrera. I am in awe of her. As one of the most successful women in fashion, she is an inspiration for Latin women everywhere.
