Student Profile: Etienne Fang - Interior Design

What is your current obsession?

I believe that Crayola markers and Post-its are the catalysts of great ideas.

What advice do you wish you’d had in school?

To value the diversity of experiences you bring to your new field. Your ability to think, create, and dream comes from your cumulative wisdom.

What did you do before coming to Parsons?

After completing my BA in photography and
psychology and an MS in education at Sarah Lawrence College, I taught at Central Park East Elementary School, a nationally acclaimed progressive public school in East Harlem. I also worked with primary school students as a creative movement instructor, using martial arts to help students build self-awareness through improvisation and physical expression.

What was your first job after graduating from Parsons?

I joined Rockwell Group Architecture, Planning
and Design as an interior designer after graduating.
I worked on several accounts, including the Robin
Hood Foundation, DeVos Children’s Hospital, Meijer, Stephen Starr Restaurant, Mills Corporation and the Gap, where I co-designed the brand strategy and store prototype for the new retail brand Forth & Towne. I still work at the Rockwell Group, but I am now a design strategist at their Studio Red division and manage projects for Coca-Cola China, Japan, and USA.

What’s the best part of your current job?

I love the constant challenge of expressing intangible emotional experiences through the design of tangible environments and objects.
