The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music offers talented musicians an exceptional opportunity to train with professional artists from New York City's illustrious jazz community. Students develop their individual creative voices as they work to meet the high standards set by our faculty. Our teaching model is based on the tradition of artist as mentor and is implemented by accomplished career musicians with significant links to the history and evolution of jazz, blues, pop, and new genres. Our students gain expertise unique to conservatory training, infused with the generative spirit and vigor of jazz and contemporary music.

Students are trained in the technical, conceptual, and historical aspects of jazz and contemporary music. Learning takes place in three environments:

  • The classroom--instruction in ensemble playing, instrumental music, music history, music theory, and related topics.
  • Tutorial instrumental study--one-on-one sessions with renowned musicians who live, work, and teach in New York City
  • Master classes--lectures, performances, and workshops featuring top artists and industry leaders. Recent guests include Barry Harris, Pat Metheny, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Stefon Harris, Bob Hurwitz, and Arturo O'Farril.

The core curriculum includes courses in performance, analysis, composition, music history, and liberal arts. In addition, you can select or audition for a wide range of elective courses and narrow your focus as you advance toward graduation.

You are also encouraged to collaborate with students in other divisions of The New School. You can take classes in other divisions of the university, including Mannes College The New School for Music, Parsons The New School for Design, and Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, as well as university-wide courses in arts and humanities. Many interdisciplinary courses are offered throughout the university--for example, a class offered jointly by Parsons and Jazz that explores sound-image relationships in early-20th-century multimedia art. You can also enroll in the BA/BFA program, a dual-degree track leading to both a BA in Liberal Arts and a BFA in Jazz Performance.
